MATERIALS: Fingering weight cotton yarn

CROCHET HOOK NUMBER 2 or size to obtain gauge

Gauge: 7 stitches (hdc)= 1 inch / 4 rows (hdc) = 1 inch

Size: one size fits most.

Row 1: Ch3, yarn over hook, insert hook in first chain, complete one hdc,  make 5 hdc more in that same stitch.  Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of row to form a ring.

Row 2: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), hdc in first st ,Ch1, *2 hdc in next hdc (in same st), ch 1 repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 3: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 2 hdc in first 2 hdc of previous row , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), hdc in next st, ch1.  Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 4: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 3 hdc in first 3 hdc of previous row , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), 2 hdc in next 2sts, ch1.  Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 5: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 4 hdc in first 4 hdc of previous row , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), 3 hdc in next 3 hdc of previous row, ch1. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 6: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 5 hdc in first 5 hdc of previous row , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), 4 hdc in next 4 hdc of previous row, ch1. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 7: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 6 hdc in first 6 hdc of previous row , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), 5 hdc in next 5 hdc of previous row, ch1. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 8: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 7 hdc in first 7 hdc of previous row , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), 6 hdc in next 6 hdc of previous row, ch1. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 9: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 8 hdc in first 8 hdc of previous row , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), 7 hdc in next 7 hdc of previous row, ch1. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 10: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 8 hdc in first 8 hdc of previous row, 2 hdc in next hdc of prev row (in same st) , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), 7 hdc in next 7 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc of prev row (in same st), ch1.  Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 11: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 10 hdc in first 10 hdc of previous row, 2 hdc in next hdc of prev row (in same st) , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), 9 hdc in next 9 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc of prev row (in same st), ch1. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 12: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 12 hdc in first 12 hdc of previous row, 2 hdc in next hdc of prev row (in same st) , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), 11 hdc in next 11 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc of prev row (in same st), ch1. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 13: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 14 hdc in first 14 hdc of previous row, 2 hdc in next hdc of prev row (in same st) , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), 13 hdc in next 13 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc of prev row (in same st), ch1. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 14: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 16 hdc in first 16 hdc of previous row, 2 hdc in next hdc of prev row (in same st) , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), 15 hdc in next 15 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc of prev row (in same st), ch1. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 15: Ch3 (in place of first hdc), 18 hdc in first 18 hdc of previous row, 2 hdc in next hdc of prev row (in same st) , ch 1, *sk 1 ch of previous row, 2 hdc in next st (in same st), 17 hdc in next 17 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc of prev row (in same st), ch1. Repeat from * 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of ch 3 of the beginning of this row.

Row 16: ch 3 (in place of first hdc), hdc in each st around, don’t join, turn. (160 hdc in total )

Row 17: ch 3 (in place of first dc), sk 2 st  [(2 dc, ch, 2dc) in next st (in same stitch)], * sk 4 st, [(2 dc, ch, 2dc) in next st (in same stitch)].  Repeat from * until end of row.  Don’t join, turn.

Rows 18-23: ch 3 (in place of first dc),  *[(2 dc, ch, 2dc) in center of next shell of previous row (in same stitch)].  Repeat from * until end of row. At the end of the row: dc in last st, turn.

Join back seam (inside hat from row 16 to 23) with sc

Make a bottom edge with sc
